Carnia is located in the north-west mountains of the Province of Udine. It is named after the population living in the land in ancient times: the "Carni", a Celtic tribe which, in its most distant migration, reached the lowlands of Friuli. When the Ancient Romans invided the land, the “Carni” settled in the mountains. Today the mountainous area corresponds to the extension of its 28 municipalities. The largest one is Tolmezzo that is also its administrative centre. Well-known for its natural beauty and the small population, Carnia has a lot of bautiful landscapes including the famous mountain resorts of Sauris, Forni di Sopra, Forni Avoltri, Ravascletto and Arta Terme.
